The
Friends of Canterbury Cathedral in the United States (FOCCUS) provides the
connection for the Episcopal Church in America with over 1400 years of roots
in English Christendom and with its global network of the Anglican community
in 164 countries. One of the oldest and most respected icons in the
English-speaking Christian world, a symbol of reconciliation since medieval
times and the cornerstone of Anglican unity, Canterbury Cathedral is positioned
to expand its leadership role in the quest for international progress in mission
and reconciliation. With the establish of the International Study Centre (ISC)
on the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral, new capabilities of bond building and
reconciliation have been made possible. [FOCCUS was instrumental in
supporting its construction.] The Cathedral Lodge and Study Centre at
Canterbury facilitates stimulating visits for pilgrimages; annual summer programs
for young seminarians and priests, to study with their colleagues from many
nations; and opportunities for both religious and secular to convene important
global assemblies to conduct affairs in the context of this historic Cathedral. Supporting
FOCCUS is an opportunity for American Anglicans to play a more important role
in discussions and programs through which the Anglican community can help make
our church, and maybe even the world, a better place.
